Rotated characters do not print in the correct position when printing with a Dot Matrix printer from Microsoft programs such as MS Word

RELATES TO:

  • Dot Matrix printers
  • Microsoft unidriver
  • Printing from Microsoft programs
  • Incorrect print orientation

EXPLANATION:

When printing from Microsoft Word for example, a rotated character in a table is not printed in the correct position. The following are examples of correct and incorrect printing positions:

Figure 1. Correct print position Figure 2. Incorrect print position

This phenomenon occurs when using Microsoft's Universal driver (Unidrv) or Microsoft Word. As both the Universal driver and Word are manufactured by Microsoft, Epson cannot resolve this issue. The cause of the print position are related to the following two factors:

  1. The Print Quality selection in the printer driver.
  2. The print position is not recognised correctly in Microsoft Word.

SOLUTION:

There is a workaround to this issue. Please change the following two items to get the correct printing result.

The Print Quality selection in the printer driver

Change the default Print Quality setting in printer driver to 120 x 144 dpi on a 9-pin printer, or 180 x 180 dpi on a 24-pin printer. The vertical Print Quality setting is the about same as the horizontal value e.g. 120 x 144 dpi, 180 x 180 dpi.

  1. Open Printers, Printers and Faxes or Printers and Other Hardware folder. See article How to open the Printers or Printers and Faxes folder in Windows for further information.

  2. Right-click on the Epson printer icon e.g. EPSON FX-890 and from the menu left-click on Printing Preferences.

  3. The Preferences window appears. Click on Advanced.

  4. Change the Print Quality setting as appropriate (120 x 144 dpi for 9-Pin, 180 x 180dpi for 24-Pin). The setting can be selected from the drop-down menu.

  5. Click on OK to save the setting, and then click on OK to close the Preferences window.

The print position is not recognised correctly in Microsoft Word

In Microsoft Word, enable the function "Use printer metrics to lay out document". After enabling this setting, Word will take into account the layout setting selected in the printer driver.

  1. Open the Options menu item.
  2. Click on the Compatibility tab from the Options window.
  3. Enable the option for "Use printer metrics to lay out document" and click OK.

In Word 2007, the location of this option is different. Click on then Word Options. Click on Advanced in the Word Options window, scroll down to the Compatibility options for heading and make sure that Layout Options is expanded. In this list, enable the function "Use printer metrics to lay out document" and click OK.

After making these changes, set the table width and font size as appropriate, and then print again.
